Effingham High School teacher Joe Fatheree has been selected as a finalist for The Global Teacher of the Year project. The Varkey Foundation launched the Global Teacher Prize in 2014 to raise the stature of the teaching profession. The award underlines the importance of the teacher profession and symbolizes that teachers throughout the world deserve to be recognized and celebrated.
There were over 5,000 nominations and applications from 127 countries for the award. Fatheree is among 50 finalists for the award.
“It is humbling to be acknowledged and to receive such an honorable nomination,” Fatheree said. “I would be remiss to not share this with my fellow educators here in Effingham Unit #40. The entire District, all of our employees strive to do what is best for our students every day,” he continued.
Fatheree was named Illinois Teacher of the Year in 2007 and was awarded the NEA’s National Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009.
A press conference regarding Fatheree’s nomination will be held Friday at 1:00pm at Effingham High School.
