The seven day firearm deer season in Illinois has wrapped up. Hunters were in the fields for three days last month, and another four this past weekend. During the first weekend of the firearm season hunters in Illinois harvested 57,968 deer, which was an improvement of more than 6,000 compared to last year’s first weekend. Locally, Effingham County totaled 624 deer during the first season. Totals for the final weekend will likely be released in the next couple of weeks. Hunters had the option to support the Illinois Sportsmen Against Hunger program. The program allows hunters to donate whole deer for processing into venison that is provided to food banks and food pantries in local communities throughout the state.
