Two Monticello residents were injured Monday night in a single vehicle crash near Farina that ended with their vehicle in flames.
At approximately 10:00pm, a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Jace Freiboth was traveling southbound on Interstate 57 near Farina. Freiboth told police that he swerved to miss a deer, causing him to leave the roadway to the right. The vehicle then drove through a fence and struck several small trees before catching firing. Freiboth and a passenger, 19-year-old Dustin Wiegel, were both able to exit the vehicle on their own and flag down a motorist.
Wiegel was transported from the scene by ambulance to St. Anthony’s Hospital with incapacitating injuries. Freiboth sustained injuries but refused treatment.
Freiboth was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to wear a seatbelt. Wiegel was also ticketed for failure to wear a seatbelt.
