Today marks the 40th Anniversary of when the massive freighter, The Edmund Fitzgerald, sank during a terrible storm on Lake Superior. A year later, Canadian songwriter Gordon Lightfoot wrote the famous and chilling song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald that brought much attention to the tragedy.
November is the worst time to travel on the Great Lakes because of the polar jet stream that points south before winter, creating massive storms that rival ocean hurricanes. At the same time, November is an incredibly important time to ship because industry must have received enough raw material to last the winter before the lakes freeze up.
