The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office has issued an advisory regarding a phone scam occurring in the area. Residents reported receiving an automated message directing them to the IRS at a 346, 425, or 509 area code. The message claims that if the call is not made, there will be consequences from the IRS. Additionally, some calls have threatened police action if the return call is not made.
The Sheriff, Dave Mahon, reminds the public never to give out personal information over the phone. If you are contacted via phone and you are uncertain of the call’s legitimacy, the Sheriff’s Office recommends checking the number using an internet search engine, like Google or Yahoo. Oftentimes if the number is being used for a scam, that information will be available online.
The Sheriff’s Office has taken numerous reports of identity theft and asks all residents to continue to safeguard their personal information.
