James Stevens, originally from New Mexico, has been driving cross-country for a little over a year to gather signatures for his online petition on change.org. Stevens, better known by his alias 420 Jim, has been advocating for the legalization of marijuana and to have all criminal records related to marijuana expunged.
Stevens has a long term plan to continue gathering signatures for his online petition and eventually march on Washington DC. He hopes to have a few million marchers. Getting high is not Stevens’ primary reason for what he does. He suggested that the hemp plant could be used to replace many other materials like plastic, wood, and even fuel.
According to Stevens, he began his travels in March of 2014. His first attempt at a paper petition was not successful, so after learning from his mistakes he’s trying a slightly different approach online.
Stevens says that what he believes to be an unfair drug charge is what inspired him to begin his advocacy and travel across the country. He claims that unjust treatment by the government forced him to action.
