The first trailer for Adam Sandler’s western themed comedy, The Ridiculous 6, has been released and frankly I’m not sure what I think. The film features a massive ensemble cast filled with big names including Adam Sandler (of course), Steve Buscemi, Taylor Lautner, Terry Crews, Danny Trejo, Rob Schneider, Luke Wilson, Nick Nolte, and David Spade. Recently, Adam Sandler hasn’t been doing great in the box office so I’ll be curious to see if this new streamed film will bring him more success. The nature of online distribution may help the film find its way to an audience that appreciates the humor more than the average movie-going crowd.
The film has been a source of some controversy. Native American cast members walked off the New Mexico set during filming on the grounds that the script portrayed them in an entirely unacceptable manner. Changes were made to the script and production continued, so I’m guessing some sort of compromise was made.
The Ridiculous 6 does prompt an interesting discussion about Netflix original content. The streaming giant has had great success with original shows such as Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, and Daredevil. Maybe the the same thing will begin to happen with Netflix original films as well. The Ridiculous 6 is set to release on December 11th.
