With winter approaching it is important as a community to have citizens who are prepared to assist in the event of a weather emergency.
In preparation, the local Red Cross chapter has scheduled volunteer training classes for our area. The goal is to help local communities be better prepared to respond to future local, area or national disasters.
For this reason two “get started” classes are being offered free of charge by the Red Cross this Saturday in Effingham. The two classes are Disaster Cycle Services: An Overview from 10:00am to noon, and Shelter Fundamentals from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.
Both will be held at the Effingham Central Fire Station Training Room, 505 W Fayette. Local disaster volunteer, and 19 year Red Cross Disaster veteran, Brad Bryant will be teaching these classes.
The Disaster Cycle class is a required class for all Red Cross Disaster Relief volunteers, and will help with understanding the disaster services provided, and the role of volunteers in disaster response.
The Shelter class prepares people with “how to” information for setting up, operating, and closing down a disaster shelter. Participants must complete “Disaster Cycle Services: An Overview”before attending Shelter Fundamentals.
Participants will also learn about local & area volunteer opportunities.
