Mattoon Police arrested a Chicago resident Tuesday after an incident with a handgun. 23-year-old Zakar Jeffrey of Chicago was arrested at 12:43am at the Sunrise Apartments.
The incident began when 2 officers were sent to a loud noise complaint at the apartments. The charges allege that officers spoke with Jeffrey and that he provided officers with a false name. When officers demanded proper identification from Jeffrey he produced a handgun from within his pocket. A fight for possession of that gun and one officer’s duty weapon immediately ensued. Jeffrey was eventually taken into custody. He had been previously banned from the property. Both officers received minor injuries during the fight. Jeffrey is facing seven total charges. Those are Obstructing Justice False Information, Criminal Trespass to State Supported Property, two counts of Aggravated Battery to a Police Officer, Aggravated Unlawful use of a Weapon, Attempting to Disarm a Peace Officer, and Resisting a Peace Officer
Police also arrested 24-year-old Ladonna L. Denson of Mattoon and Chicago. Denson was charged with Obstructing Justice, and Bringing a Firearm into a Penal Institution. Those charges allege that while officers were attempting to apprehend Jeffrey, Denson obtained his handgun and hid it from police. Furthermore, she is alleged to have brought said loaded firearm into the MPD jail by hiding it within her body cavity.
