J.J. Abrams is well known for building hype for his films by keeping things under wraps. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is no exception. We know very little about about the plot other than that it takes place after the events in “Return of the Jedi.” Here’s what we do know:
The trailers are absolutely stunning, but they don’t give much away. We do know that some of the original characters like Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Luke Skywalker will be back. The trailers have also shown the apparent rise of what appears to be an Empire-like military force called the “New Order.” We have seen Rebel X-Wings engaging new looking TIE Fighters implying that there is still a conflict between the two factions. We have also been introduced to two new characters, Finn, played by John Boyega, and Rey , played by Daisy Ridley. Finn is apparently an ex-Stormtrooper and Rey is some kind of scavenger.
We also have been introduced to Kylo Ren, clearly a Sith as he wields a red lightsaber and seems to be in charge of the New Order. For the records, I do not approve of the lightsaber hand guard.
Oddly, we have seen Leia, Han, and Chewbacca in the trailers, but no sign of Luke Skywalker. He’s definitely in the film because we have heard his voice in one trailers going on about the Force in his family. But why have we not seen him? Perhaps he became some sort of a recluse like Yoda.
Luke’s absence may make sense. In the trailer, while talking to Rey, Han has to confirm that the stories of the Jedi are all true. So maybe after the events of “Return of the Jedi,” the Jedi once again slid into myth and legend. Maybe Luke did not want to reform the Jedi Order for some reason?
Either way. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” comes to theaters on December 18th. Tickets are on sale, but technical difficulties have been reported. May the Force be with you!
