The Effingham City Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Sunday evening. The victim of the shooting has been identified as 16-year-old Kaylee Jacob of Effingham. Police responded to the shooting in the 3200 block of South Banker Street at approximately 6:15pm. Jacob was transported from the scene to St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Police say that from their investigation it is believed that a 16-year-old male was handling a handgun when the victim was believed to have been shot. The handgun used in the shooting had previously been reported the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office as stolen.
Two unidentified male juveniles have been detained.
The Effingham City Police Department is continuing their investigation into the shooting with the assistance of the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services, and the Effingham County State’s Attorney’s Office.
