An Altamont man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after a burglary and an attempt to flee police. 36-year-old James W. Settlemire Jr. has been charged in the incident with theft over $500 and with aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer.
The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office was alerted of the burglary, which occurred at a business in Watson, at approximately 2:06pm. During the investigation, Sheriff’s Deputies determined that a loaded Glock 9mm pistol had been stolen. A description of the suspect and his vehicle were then dispatched, and it was noted that the subject may be armed and dangerous.
At approximately 5:24pm police observed a vehicle and driver matching the description on County Road 300th Street, which is south of Altamont. A traffic stop was attempted, but the vehicle failed to stop. The officer pursued the vehicle to a rural area east of Altamont, where the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into a wooded area.
A perimeter was then set up, and an Altamont Police Department K-9 Unit was dispatched. An Illinois State Police Air Operations unit was also called on to assist with the search.
The K-9 unit tracked the subject approximately a half mile to a road where the suspect was picked up and taken to a residence about a mile away. Through a tip from a passing motorist, Deputies responded to the residence and apprehended the suspect without incident. The Glock pistol which had been thrown from the vehicle was recovered and the airplane was called off.
