An Effingham man facing Arson charges has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. 31-year-old Justin Shadwell pleaded guilty, but mentally ill, to the charge of Criminal Damage to Property. With the guilty plea, probation is an option for Shadwell, thought prison time is still an option. The original Arson charge carried a sentencing range of four to 15 years.
Shadwell was charged for starting a fire in February at 608 South Fifth Street in Effingham. There were questions throughout the case’s proceedings if Shadwell were fit to stand trial. He will be in court for his sentencing on November 17.
