What would you answer if I were to ask you to state your vision? On its face, this seems like an easy question. How about, “I see myself as the richest person in town”. Hmmmm. That sounds more like wishful thinking than a vision statement.
Your vision statement is the declaration of what and where you will be in your ideal future. What it is not is a wish, a hope, or a pipe dream.
A carefully thought out vision statement speaks to who you are and how you envision your future. Your vision should be bold yet sound and reasonable. Your vision statement is written by you and for you. It is your lodestar; the guiding light for your life.
Putting your vision into words takes time and soul searching. Imagine you were to be given the chance to travel wherever you wished to go. After the initial excitement of such an offer dies away you realize you have to create a map to guide you through the many steps, adventures, trials, and exploits that you will surely encounter. Your mission will be to stay on track, building momentum as you travel through these various stages of your life, keeping your eyes, heart and mind focused always on your vision.
