Illinois Sheriffs’ Association President Tom Templeton is asking local and state law enforcement to use their discretion and issue warnings rather than citations for expired license plate stickers. Templeton, who is the LaSalle County Sheriff, said that the state not having a budget has changed the process. He suggested that if the sticker has not been expired for more than 60 days the driver should be advised that they need to address the problem rather than be ticketed.
Because of the lack of a state budget, it was recently announced that the Secretary of State’s office has suspended mailing out vehicle registration renewal reminder notices.
