A Clay City man was killed Sunday afternoon in an accident in Effingham County. The accident occurred at approximately 3:21pm on Effingham County Road 2300 East, which is known as the Dieterich Blacktop, at the intersection of County Road 750 North.
81-year-old Thomas Scanlan of Clay City and 58-year-old Earl Probst of Dieterich were both traveling northbound on the Dieterich Blacktop, and were approaching the 750 North Intersection. Scanlan was traveling behind Probst. Probst then slowed his vehicle to make a left turn. Scanlan attempted to pass on the left, striking the side of Probst’s vehicle. Scanlan’s vehicle left the roadway after making contact, overturning several times before coming to rest on its top approximately 50 feet off of the roadway.
Scanlan was airlifted from the accident to St. Anthony’s Hospital. He was pronounced deceased upon arrival. Probst wasn’t injured in the accident.
