An Illinois State Police Hazmat technician was on the scene Thursday afternoon monitoring a Formaldehyde spill on Interstate 57 North. The spill occurred around mile post 186, when a commercial semi trailer hauling the hazardous material stopped abruptly as state police and fire crews were dealing with a fully engulfed semi trial just ahead at mile post 187. When the second semi stopped a valve on the top of tanker snapped and caused the semi to loose a small amount of Formaldehyde. The Formaldehyde spilled on the truck and on the roadway. Formaldehyde is a corrosive and requires an evacuation of only the area directly around the scene of the spill
The spill was cleaned by the Coles County Hazardous Materials Team.
