The Effingham County Tax and Finance Committee was updated on the ongoing budget making process for FY16. Committee chairman Rob Arnold said that at this stage the budget has a deficit of $139,000. Arnold plans to meet with the various department heads next week to look into areas that can be cut to get the budget balanced. There are a number of unknowns at this stage though, due to the financial uncertainty at the state level.
The committee also heard from representatives from the Ballard Nature Center in Altamont. The nature center is requesting $10,000 to assist with ongoing projects, including the resealing of the drive way leading up to their building. It was noted that in 15 years of operation, the Ballard Nature Center has never received any funding from the state or county. A decision on this item was tabled until next month due to the lack of budget at the state level. Overall though, the committee showed support for assisting the nature center.
