Congressman John Shimkus, who represents the local 15th congressional district, was in Effingham Tuesday. Shimkus held a press conference outside of the local Planned Parenthood building, at which he spoke about congressional efforts to end taxpayer funding for the organization. The press conference was the second of three held Tuesday by Congressman Shimkus, with the others held at Planned Parenthood locations in Champaign and Belleville.
Shimkus specifically condemned Planned Parenthood for the videos that were recently released that appear to show Planned Parenthood staff discussing the sale of body parts from aborted fetuses.
Shimkus also highlighted that there are 670 federally qualified health clinics and rural health clinics in the state that provide health services to women, compared to just 18 Planned Parenthood locations. Additionally, he said that these other health clinics provide considerably more health services than Planned Parenthood.
