While I think the mountain climbing genre reached its peak a while ago (bad mountain joke), I’m nonetheless intrigued by the upcoming film Everest that’s in theaters September 18th. The film is directed by Baltasar Kormákur (2 Guns, Contrband) and stars Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, Nightcrawler), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), Keira Knightly (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Imitation Game), Robin Wright (The Princess Bride, Forrest Gump), and Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, The Goonies) among others. It is based on a true story where two separate Everest expeditions are caught in one of the worst storms ever recorded. Naturally, everything goes wrong and the main characters must fight for survival on the frigid slopes. The trailer is intense with sublime shots of the mountain and includes a few heartwarming moments where various cast members provide inspirational rationale as to why they are climbing the world’s tallest peak. It seems cliché, but maybe I’m just being too cynical. Regardless, Everst looks like one to see.
