If it seems like I have been talking about films a lot lately, I have. It’s partially because there are a lot of great movies coming out and partially because Oscar Season is starting to pick up. Regardless, the Toronto International Film Festival begins tomorrow, so I’m all excited. One film playing at the festival that I am particularly looking forward to seeing is Scott Cooper’s Black Mass starring Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean, Public Enemies), Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey, The Social Network), and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, Star Trek: Into Darkness). Depp plays the real Boston Gangster, Whitey Bulger, as he climbs to the top of the criminal underworld while acting as an FBI informant. It’s based on a book of the same name authored by Dick Lyhr and Gerard O’Neill. So far, the film has been well received and should be a nice break from repeatedly seeing Johnny Depp as a pirate or some other stereotype. Oh, and Kevin Bacon is in this film as well. Black Mass is set to hit wide release on September 17th and is most certainly one to catch.
