Charleston resident Larry Steeples has been sentenced to life in prison. The sentence comes from the April 2014 murder of 47-Gina Giberson. Giberson, who was also a Charleston resident, was shot to death in her home by Steeples. Prior to her death, Giberson had filed for an order of protection against Steeples.
Defense Attorney Lupita Thompson, who represented Steeples in the case, has requested a hearing to reduce the sentence. She explained that she believes Steeples was not mentally well at the time of the shooting. A jury did find that Steeples was mentally ill at the time of the shooting, but that his state of mind did not prevent him from knowing right from wrong.
Steeples will be back in court for the resentencing hearing on September 11.
