The Effingham Fire Department responded to a structure fire near a residence Saturday night. The fire occurred just before 11:00pm in the 700 block of Jefferson Street. Upon arrival, firefighters reported a fully involved shed next to an apartment building at 701 Franklin Avenue (one block north), a 4 unit apartment complex. Crews began to put the fire out at the shed, which was also impacting the outside wall of the apartment building.
The exterior wall of the apartment building was heavily damaged and further examination found fire within the wall. Further investigation with thermal imaging cameras found heavy smoke damage in the attic space at the apartment, with signs of fire extension near the exterior wall. Overhaul was done in the apartment units removing all interior wall coverings on the side which had been damaged. All four tenants of the apartment building were displaced, but no injuries reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The scene was cleared at 1:03am Sunday.
All tenants of the apartment complex made arrangements to stay with friends or relatives.
