“No Escape,” an action thriller directed by John Erick Dowdle, starring Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan opens in theaters tomorrow. I must admit, after seeing the trailer for this one I was quite confused. First, there was Owen Wilson acting happy and optimistic with his wife, played by Lake Bell. Then, all the sudden the family is inexplicably running across rooftops and dodging angry mobs with explosions in the background.
Allegedly, there is a plot. Owen Wilson’s character, Jack Dwyer, is a businessman who recently relocated to some stereotypical Southeastern Asian country right in the midst of a bloody coup. This is bad news for Dwyer (Wilson), and his family, because apparently one of the agenda items for the rebels includes killing foreigners. Pierce Brosnan is somewhere in the mix, probably off somewhere being grizzled and charming. That’s about it.
So who knows? I think this movie is going to land somewhere between the bad to mediocre range. Based on the trailer, it seems like a pretty stereotypical action flick. I can’t say that any of the characters seem particularly interesting. The trailer focuses on Wilson for the most part and does little to portray him as being anything other than a shocked businessman.
The film opens tomorrow and is rated R for violence and strong language.
