The Charleston Police Department responded to a call of gun shots during the early morning hours Saturday. Upon arriving on the scene just before 2:00am officers were met by members of both the Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi fraternities. A press release from the Charleston Police Department said that the fraternities were identified by insignia, clothing and a flag.
Officers observed 400 to 500 subjects at the scene. There were several fights involving 10 to 15 subjects that broke out while officers were present, but most were dispersed without police intervention.
One person, Aaron Haskins, was arrested for aggravated battery on a police officer. Haskins was transported to the Coles County Sheriff’s Department for incarceration pending the posting of bond.
Though the officers received calls of gun shots, those arriving on scene found no evidence that shots were actually fired at the location.
