The first teaser for Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, set to hit theaters in January, was released today. The Hateful Eight will be Tarantino’s second crack at a western after his 2012 film Django Unchained. This new Western features an octet of characters played by Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walter Goggins, Demián Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Bruce Dern.
The story takes place during the aftermath of the Civil War in Wyoming. While transporting the fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), John Ruth (Kurt Russell) encounters the infamous bounty hunter, Major Marquis Warren (Samuel Jackson), and Southern renegade, Chris Mannix (Walter Goggins). They are forced to find shelter from a blizzard at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach rest stop of sorts. The Haberdashery is occupied by Bob (Demián Bichir), hangman Oswaldo Mobray (Time Roth), Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and former Confederate General, Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). Surely such an odd assortment of degenerates trapped in one place promises to be loaded with plot twists, betrayal, and debauchery.
Based on past Tarantino films, you can bet that The Hateful Eight is going to be a violent one, probably with oodles of witty dialogue on the side. One thing to anticipate is the chemistry of the cast, many of whom have worked with Tarantino on past projects. Of particular note, are Tim Roth and Michael Madsen working together with Tarantino for the first time since the 1992 Reservoir Dogs. Maybe we’ll be treated to another cringe-inducing torture scene where, this time, Roth slices off some unfortunate fellow’s extremities while Madsen watches. All things considered, The Hateful Eight is definitely one to catch next January.
