Two Effingham County Correctional Officers were attacked while performing routine cell checks Wednesday night. An inmate, Matthew Rauch, rushed at the Officers to try and get past them. A struggle ensued and the inmate was subdued outside the cell but in the cell block. An Effingham County Deputy assisted in handcuffing the inmate.
Matthew Rauch was placed in an isolation cell without incident. There were no injuries except for some scratches and bruises on all parties.
Matthew Rauch has been charged with Attempted Escape from a Penal Institution and two counts of Aggravated Battery to a Correctional Officer.
Sheriff Mahon commended the Correctional Officers and the Deputy for their quick response to the incident. The Officers used their training to restore order and maintain the security of the jail.
