A funeral service will be held this week for a 1962 Mattoon High School graduate who was killed in the Vietnam war. Chief Warrant Officer 3 James “Larry” Phipps was declared missing after he was part of a crew flying a UH-1C Huey helicopter that was gunned down in South Vietnam in January of 1968.
A 2011 search of the crash site led to the recovery of Phipps remains, which led to the official closing of the case. Eight years after the crash his status was changed to Presumed Dead. The ceremony will be on Wednesday, June 17 at Arlington National Cemetery.
