District 12 troopers from the Illinois State Police are conducting Occupant Restraint Enforcement Patrols (OREP) this month in area counties. The counties where the patrols will occur are Clark, Cumberland, Effingham and Clay.
This enforcement effort allows police to target an area with saturation patrols that focus on traffic violations and related compliance with safety belt and child safety seat laws.
Police say that seat belts are one of the most effective safety devices in vehicles, as they are estimated to save over 12,000 lives each year. Additionally, over half of vehicle occupants killed in a traffic crash were not properly buckled up.
This project is funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Transportation Safety.
