Local Sports Update for 6/1/15…
In high school baseball Saturday, Teutopolis was scheduled to play Belleville Althoff in the title game of the 2A Vandalia Sectional. However, that contest was postponed due to rain and will now be played today at 4. In other action, Neoga beat Edwards County 4-3 in 8 innings to claim the 1A St. Anthony Sectional. Neoga will play against Cobden later today at the Super-Sectional in Carbondale. That game begins at 3 PM.
In high school softball Saturday, Cumberland won the 1A St. Anthony Sectional with a 12-1 win over Central A&M. The Lady Pirates advance to play in tomorrow’s Springfield Super-Sectional.
In college baseball, the University of Illinois is one win away from advancing to the Super-Regional round of the NCAA Tournament. Illinois will play Wright State at 1 o’clock this afternoon in Champaign, with a second game possible at 5 PM if Illinois loses the first contest. If Illinois wins the first game, or loses the first but wins the second, then the Illini will advance to the Super-Regional. If Illinois does indeed move on to the Super-Regional round, they would host either Vanderbilt or Radford in a best-of-3 series for the right to advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
In Major League Baseball yesterday, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1. Elsewhere, the Chicago Cubs won against Kansas City 2-1 in 11 innings while the Chicago White Sox beat Houston 6-0.
